At camping les Medes we present you a journey through our History

By 1968 there were already five campsites in L’Estartit which, according to local historian Marcel·lí Audivert, were filled to bursting point in July and August.

At Camp de l’Arbre there was the Granja Bona Festa, owned by Joan Dalmàs, which first opened as a campsite in the summer of 1968. Surrounded by fields and set against the dramatic backdrop of the Montgrí mountains, the site was lovingly managed until the death of its owner; from that point on, his heirs let the campsite to several tenants over the years but as time passed the campsite began to fall into disrepair and was eventually abandoned.

In 1984 we, the Pla-Coll family, arrived on the scene. We bought the business and renamed it Càmping Les Medes and from that very first moment we put all our enthusiasm and efforts into doing a great job.

In September of the same year, we began the first building works in order to open the campsite the following summer. In the main building we added the restaurant, completely renovated the bar and enlarged the reception area. We also built one bathroom block, a new supermarket and three bungalows, as well as enlarging the campsite with 100 new plots, all with water, electricity and drainage.

In 1987 we built a new swimming pool, and in 1989, a second bathroom block. Meanwhile, the bungalows were becoming very popular, so in 1992 we decided to add more, increasing the total number to twelve.

We have continued to improve the campsite year after year. In September 1996 we began working on the heated swimming pool, which was inaugurated at Christmas the same year. Later in 2003, as part of our permanent drive for continuous improvement, we replaced the old caravan park with a new sports zone for playing tennis, beach volleyball, basketball and five-a-side football.

Our philosophy of ongoing improvement, both in terms of quality of service as well as of developing our activity in an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable framework has led us to work on and to achieve, over time, a whole series of milestones of which we are extremely proud.

In December 1999, we were granted the Tourist Diploma of the Government of Catalonia.
Still in 1999, we became part of a pilot scheme of the Catalan Department of the Environment and the Federation of Campsites, and in 2000 we achieved the ISO 14001:2004 environmental management system standard, making us pioneers in this area in Europe.

In 2003, we certified our ISO 9001:2000 quality management system and we obtained the Government of Catalonia’s Environmental Quality Guarantee Emblem.
We have been a EUROTOP campsite according to the Dutch ANWB Association since 2012 and a SUPERPLATZ according to the German ADAC Association since 2013.

In 2016, the German magazine CARAVANING carried out an analysis of all the SUPERPLATZ campsites and the qualifications of users on the various social network sites and we were listed as the second-best European campsite.

Since 2018, we have been part of the ECST (European Charter of Sustainable Tourism), a EUROPARC project, along with other local companies and agents, with the purpose of working so that our destination becomes a point of reference in terms of sustainability.

However, the history of Càmping Les Medes is much more than all these facts and figures. The real story lies with all the people we have met along the way, whether they were holidaymakers or employees and collaborators; the friends we have made, the moments we have shared… All of you have unintentionally left your mark on us and that will stay with us always.
